On my Facebook I wrote
"I belong to that generation which in spite of using IT a lot, is still uncomfortable with using social media. I believe its the most effective way to influence the thought process and bring positive change ii society. I am trying hard to make it a habit to spare one to two hours a week for it. I have spent my life in different universities and thoroughly enjoyed my career. However, for the last couple of years, since the education has globally become and industry, it is disturbing me a lot. At times I wonder what is being done in the name of education and its implications on society. I have taken an initiative in the the name of "Rethinking Business Education". We held one workshop from the platform of FMS Riphah few months back and want to have a broader discussion. I will share my ideas on my blog and request the academia, industry and general public to participate in it. We may bring a positive change."
The response is very encouraging. It seems every one feels it, the only requirement is to have a forum for discussion. So, I am providing that opportunity. To set the stage for discussion I am raising the following questions.
How do we define education?
Could there be education without defining its objectives?
What is "Higher Education" and how should it be distinguished from secondary and primary education?
Should Higher Education be everyone's right?
What are the roots of present ,so called, education system?
Could there be standardized teaching methodology for all types of disciplines?
Is present system worth calling "Education System"?
..........and many many more questions.
Pl ponder on these questions and respond. Next time I will post some material regarding these questions.
Gradually we will move on to Management education. However, before we start discussing specific issues regarding management education, we need to look at a macro picture. Management schools are in effect "Corporate Management Schools". We keep on talking corporate culture that has become a fad now a days. Even the politicians are asking to bring corporate culture in govt. institutions. I wonder if they, and most of the academician,s know what corporate culture is. I want this to be discussed.
Moving a step further, the corporate business is a subset of a bigger culture "the capitalism". To understand the present education education system and particularly the management education, we need to understand and challenge the basic assumptions of the system.

I think education is based on mental settlement because we get same kind of knowledge or info we can say but the difference came with our capability to decode it accordiny so when we came to teaching methodologies somtimes our eloboration of things goes with that particular direction or impact of significant other which leads us to our behaviors (independent or dependent)

I think education is the discussion between students and teacher which we do not observe from the primary level to higher level. This gap should be addressed and removed.Till graduation our students do not know where to go.Students should be evaluate on secondary level according to their intelligentsia and caliber for choosing specific field of studies. We do not emphasis on social sciences that is why we behave as a nation unsocial. The quality of education is declining with a great speed due to cheating as it has been observed even in the prestigious institutes.
ReplyDeleteEducation must have specific objectives and goals and the think must be ensured to know every teacher and student.
Here in Wana South Waziristan Agency education has been spoiled by different religious political parties.Politics should be avoid in educational institution.

Education is what is left with someone after forgetting what he/she has learn in the school, college or university. The great dilemma with the present system is lake of imparting ethical values to students. That is the main reason we are delivering high educated people with propensity for wealth and their souls are corrupt. From the primary education students know about money but not about the ethical values. The materialistic thoughts just get grow and grow and at the end they pay tribute only to money

first of all I am very excited and uptight to see Sir's Blogs because after a long time I am feeling myself in front of Sir, and getting an opportunity to learn something undamaged and something diverse. So guys lets enjoy this environment and if someone haven't any idea about the given topic then don't discourage, act like a back bencher and wait for the surprising & shocking answers and materials given by Sir. THANKS SIR
ReplyDeleteIts good to use social media to stay in contact with the students and many other intellectuals... but unfortunately what i m observing on social media that teachers are showing their extreme favortism by calling out the name of few of the students and mentioning their grade deserving abilities thus being a cause of demotivation for the real hard working students rather than the students who are good in TC
ReplyDeleteTeachers should make the forums to motivate the students rather than to motivate only "few" students and discouraging others...
ReplyDeletehopefully Sir your forum will add positively to the motivation of the students :)
Best of luck
Dear Fellows,
ReplyDeleteEducation to me is not just going to college, attending lectures and taking good grades in exams or keeping yourself in good books of teachers.
Education is getting mature in life and to learn how to respond to the situations, how to treat your life. Its all about escalate your mental level.
its not about your course out lines but to identify your skills, polish capabilities and God gifted abilities.
I still Remember a line from Most respected teacher Sir Aman ullah Khan. once i asked for course outline in a course of Accounting he replied " Dunia mein jaha bhi kahi, kuch bhi accounting mein perha ya perhaya jaa ra hay ya perhaya jaa sakta hay ya perhaya jai ga . . . all includes your course outline".
Sir how many teachers you know who can respond in such a manner ???
now a days teachers are also concerned with their salaries and nothing else, even they dont have the full command on their subject . . . if we have got such teachers then what are we talking about . . . standard of education or what . . . first of all we need to teach the teachers to get a better nation from our schools, colleges and universities.
we cant blame the system because we are responsible to build this system . . . how many teachers are there in our education system who really deserve the respect on the basis of their knowledge and command ? ? ?
Your civilization will commit suicide with its
ReplyDeleteown daggers.
A nest built on a frail bough cannot be
durable.
The caravan of feeble ants will take the rose
petal for a boat
And inspite of all blasts of waves, it shall cross
the river.
I will take out may worn-out caravan in the
pitch darkness of night.
My sighs will emit sparks and my breath will
produce flames.

Ethics, moral values, materialism, commercialism.....
“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”

Education to me is construction of norms and manners in student that pave the way further to his practical life. Earning handsome livelihood is only the outcome of that education not the purpose as widely misunderstood. Therefore while designing system for education the key factor is the condition of future environment where the student will live.
ReplyDeleteSir,
ReplyDeleteI have heard you talking about rethinking education. Our age is not even half of your experience. We have many ideas but all of them have either touch of emotions or the feel of non maturity. Neither we hold the wisdom nor the position to change much. We have minor benchmarks. Grades, Jobs, Fail, Pass but the subject requires all what I mentioned above or even much more.
I feel you are the right, actually the best to direct. You have just started something which generations after generations will benefit from it. Me or other fellows might not be able to contribute much but let it be the selfish approach on my part that I am writing just to say, "I was part of Rethinking Education"
God Bless You Sir!
Thanks every one. I am waiting for more responses. I wish in addition to my students senior faculty members of different universities contribute in this discussion. One thing at the outset, I want to learn from you and improve my thinking. It has to be a collective effort.
ReplyDeleteSchools and colleges are producing Pet parrots only higher eduction in Pakistan to some extent have potential to produce intellectual. so my view higher eduction is necessary for all. But we have to reconsider the teaching material, text books etc. we are following the books of capitalist writers and advocating their system as a superior system.
ReplyDeleteI was reviewing literature on ethics, during reading the material I came to know that the work of western scholars is actually not reliable in term of generating a good moral society. the life of these writers is not reflecting the picture of what they have taught to their nation I think it is the best time to rethink over course material for business.

Sir,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Samina & its my first interaction with you. I agree that we have a Ratoo Tota education system in Pakistan. But we are the one who needs to play their role. Moreover, need is to have same direction for all of us. Its the only way through which we can change our lives, society and the fate of the country. Instead of just reading books we should give a thought to our students that induce them to think & utilize their skills in an effective way. In my opinion we should now focus on sloving these problems instead of just critizing it.
Masha'Allah, a true source of inspiration for me.
